KOSH |

please note that I refer to Kosh in male terms. However, there is no proven evidence of Kosh's gender, or even if the Vorlons had genders. I base my assumption of Kosh's masculinity on "his" voice and comments by JMS.

Vorlon Ambassador Kosh Naranek first appeared in the Babylon 5 pilot movie, The Gathering (Although we later see him as far back as the Earth-Minbari War in In The Beginning).
The mysterious Vorlon was only off his ship all of a minute before he was poisoned, and the rest of the movie was spent trying to save him/figure out who poisoned him/how. The Vorlon government didn't want his encounter suit removed, but Dr. Benjamin Kyle and telepath Lyta Alexander did take some liberties (the first opening Kosh's encounter suit and the latter scanning him). Without destorying the plot, that's all you need to know. Kosh did survive.
Throughout most of Babylon 5, season 1, Kosh remained reclusive - "studying" someone or something aboard the station. Most likely, studying everything.
In season 2, Kosh took quite the interest in new Babylon 5 captain, John Sheridan, and started venturing into council meetings more often. All this culminated in Kosh leaving his encounter suit to save Sheridan at the end of the season, finally (kind of) revealing himself. Kosh appeared as a winged being of light, but each person/race saw something different, usually a god from their mythology. It is interesting to note that Centauri Ambassador, Londo Mollari, saw nothing, perhaps already too shrouded in shadows.

Kosh's god-like appearance to so many races has appeared as adequate proof that the Vorlon's had been to all the other worlds, perhaps manipulating their appearances so that the younger races regarded them as gods. This is later backed up in many random comments. While the Kosh we "see" is not necessarily what Kosh looks like, I do find it reasonable to assume that Kosh was some sort of being of light - just maybe not in such recognizable forms.

In season 3, Kosh was ultimately killed by the Shadows, after agreeing to get the Vorlon's directly involved in the Shadow conflict. This action was prompted none-too-gently by Sheridan, who didn't understand Kosh's reasons for staying out of the fight. However, a piece of Kosh imbedded itself into Sheridan's subconscious, as would become apparent in later episodes, so Kosh was not entirely gone. Prior to Kosh's "death", Lyta Alexander had become his attache and had shared a considerable telepathic bond with him, since she had been modified on the Vorlon Homeworld.

Kosh's ship went out to destory itself upon his death, suggesting that it was both living and deeply connected to Kosh.

In season 4, the last of Kosh left Sheridan and (in conjunction with pieces of Sheridan and First One, Lorien) destroyed Kosh's successor, the evil Vorlon Ambassador Ulkesh. For all intents and purposes, Kosh was gone.
However, in season 5 during the Brakiri Day of the Dead, Kosh did send a message to Sheridan, suggesting that wherever Kosh is, he's still a presence.

Believe it or not, that was the short version.
